Half of a Yellow Sun follows twin sisters Olanna and Kainene from a wealthy Nigerian family, who return home to 1960s Nigeria, where they choose very different paths as they are swept-up by the struggle for Biafran independence from Nigeria. Archive footage and 1960s TV newscasts are featured. Director & Screenplay: Biyi Bandele. Cast: Thandiwe Newton; Chiwetel Ejiofor; Anika Noni Rose. Half of a Yellow Sun carries a Certificate 15 rating.
Half of a Yellow Sun is based on a novel of the same name, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This modern classic was awarded the Women’s Prize For Fiction in 2007.
The Charlton & Woolwich Free Film Festival presents its 5th annual event – part of a group of community festivals – run by volunteers these screenings celebrate film bringing communities together in buildings they might never visit. St Luke’s Church is a Grade 2* listed building that dates from 1630, built with Charlton House – one of London’s best preserved Jacobean houses. Join us to see Half of a Yellow Sun in the tranquil setting of an historic London church – a brief talk about the history of St Luke’s Church will be given at 18.45 by Joseph Spooner, one of St Luke’s Church Wardens. Refreshments will be sold in aid of St Luke’s Church.
