Everyone is welcome at the memorial service for our late patron, Lord Gough. We know how much Lord Gough valued his links with Charlton, and this will be a fitting moment for the community to give thanks for his life.
At the service friends representing different aspects of Lord Gough’s life will speak and lead prayers. The service will be led by Bishop Christopher.

I known Lord Gough since 1948. In those days the Sunday Eucharist had a choir of only ladies and girls, run by Deaconess Colebrooke. The men had their choir at the Mattins Service. When Shane came to church with his mother (our Patron then) and Nannie, he was drawn to the 3 ropes hanging in the Baptistry – they were the bell pulls. We had 3 bells in the tower then. The choir put their white veils on in that area ready to process for the beginning of the service. That is how I got to know to him. Over the years he had come to St Luke’s with his mother and when she died he became our Patron. Since that time, Shane has attended St Luke’s regularly throughout the years. He has been a wonderful Patron, supporting our church in everyway possible. His biggest love was our Walker organ. Back in 1973 I started to put on “Music for a Summer’s Evening” concerts in aid of repairs to the organ. More recently, Shane had been in touch with Walkers and had managed to get a discount on repairs to the bellows. We had been saving up for these and had £7000 in the kitty. In latter years, when I had put on the concerts, he always supported them because of the organ. He also loved the bells, so much so, he donated a peel for the Millennium , which can be operated from the first floor room in the tower.
Shane was a good friend and we often spoke on the phone or corresponded over various things. I will really miss him and so will St Luke’s.
